Tsm server
Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) is a client/server program that provides storage management services in a multivendor, multiplatform computer environment.
TSM provides data backup, archive, and space management functions to protect data assets and reduce network-computing costs. TSM function is centrally administered and based on defined policies, thus reducing costly, repetitive, error-prone tasks, and it provides maximum automation, security, and th---roughput.
Because TSM is a client/server application, function is distributed across TSM program components. TSM is scaleable from a single stand-alone workstation to an entire distributed network

TSM Components:
1. Administrative Client:
Provides a graphical user interface for controlling the TSM server. It also lets the administrator manage the server from anywhere within the TSM network.
2. Backup-Archive Client
Provides backup-restore and archive-retrieve functions to TSM clients. The component runs on each PC, workstation, file server, or LAN server that requires TSM backup and archive.
3. TDP Application Client
Provides backup-restore for selected databases. TDP Application Clients are available for SQL, Exchange, Oracle, and Lotus Domino databases.
4. HSM Client
Provides HSM function to HSM clients. The HSM component can be installed on workstations or file servers.
5. Server
Provides administrative services and server resources to TSM clients. It uses the TSM database, recovery log, and TSM server storage to ensure data availability. The TSM server coordinates backup and migration of client files to disk, optical disk, or tape.
The server console provides a command-line interface, but it is often more convenient to access the server from the administrative client.
6. Database and Recovery Log
Not a component of TSM, the TSM database and recovery log is at the heart of TSM activity. TSM saves information in the TSM database about each file that it backs up, archives, or migrates. This information includes the file name, file size, file owner, management class, copy group, and location of the file in TSM server storage.
TSM saves information about database update transactions in the recovery log. This information allows TSM to recover the database to a current state in the event of a disaster or interruption to TSM server processing.
7. TSM Server Storage
Not a component of TSM, server storage is the destination for all TSM client data.

TSM database:
Tivoli Storage Manager saves information in the Tivoli Storage Manager database about each file, raw logical volume, or database that it backs up, archives, or migrates. This information includes the file name, file size, management class, copy group, location of the files in Tivoli Storage Manager server storage, and all other information except for the data. Data is stored in a storage pool. The Tivoli Storage Manager Database is the heart of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager. Without database data cannot be restored.
TSM recovery log:
TSM saves information about database update transactions in the recovery log. This information allows TSM to recover the database to a current state in the event of a disaster or interruption to TSM server processing.
Ways of managing TSM server and BAclient:
1. Admin center:
The Tivoli Storage Manager Administration Center, which operates on the Integrated Solutions Console (ISC), provides a task-oriented graphical user interface for storage administrators. Isc can have more than one server.
Tasks:
Creating server maintenance scripts, scheduling, adding storage devices, setting policy domains, user management, viewing the Health Monitor are some of the tasks the Administration Center provides.
